There clearly exists a need to reconsider literacy as an ongoing development - referred to earlier as lifelong literacy. The acquisition of the new literacy cannot be ticked off at eleven. Instead, while acknowledging the need for basic schooled literacy, there should be a further taxonomy of literacy skills acknowledged: basic, extended and advanced literacy skills, reflecting changes made in reading and writing demands through ICT. Extended literacy, for example, would include the understanding of text beyond the linear and the differing demands made on the reader encountering this type of text.

That individuals rely on mental models in order to know and to do - even for simple acts like recalling facts. Such models may be held consciously as well as unconsciously, are informal and faulty, and may be revealed to an individual through introspection or to others through patterns of behaviour and discussion. 2. That there is an external, recorded body of shared knowledge in the form of oral and performance tradition, books, film and television and other media (particularly World Wide Web) which represents accepted and disputed meanings in society.
