Visits and engagements followed on from one another in quick succession. 19 Marine journeys were to include calling on St Petersburg, New York, and the South Pole, while projected visitors ranged from Mehmet Ali in 1847 to the Emperor of Lapland in 1852. A full-page engraving captures the packed schedule of Victoria and Albert and Punch’s breathless attempts to keep up with their movements (Figure 1). Produced upon Victoria and Albert’s return from Saxe-Coburg in 1845, the engraving neatly combines their travels with their tender regard for the royal hearth.
18 Rather than conﬁning the Court to a single location, Victoria was lauded for bringing its economic beneﬁts, and sharing its attractiveness, with her subjects. In conjunction with the development of an illustrated and a popular press, Victoria and Albert enthusiastically inaugurated a new style of royalty.
