The study of the changing status of women may then acquire its rightful place as one of the relevant factors within a theoretical framework. 5. SUMMARY There is most likely a relation between the changing status of women and demographic factors. In order to prove this relation it is necessary to develop measurement instruments for both concepts. This article deals with problems in measuring the status of women. An analysis is made of the different meanings the coneept aequired in different historical contexts.

E. Socio-psychological relations The socio-psychological relations can be studied by constructing indices of domination-subordination variables, for instance in decision situations. The indices could be used in different social situations, in the family, on the job, in committees, in organizations etc. Though it is technically possible to construct indicators to measure the social status of women in several countries in different fieIds, the co-operation of many institutions would be needed to collecit data in the same standardized way.
