Sixth, civil society activity in respect of global finance might be undermined by undemocratic practices. Civil society groups – including those that campaign for greater democracy in global finance – can fall short of democratic criteria in their own activities. A lack of internal democracy within CSOs is not only objectionable in itself, but also contradicts civil society efforts to bring greater democracy to politics at large. For example, civil society associations might offer their members little opportunity for participation beyond the payment of subscriptions.
The Bank’s main intervention in respect of regulatory frameworks has involved loans and technical assistance for financial sector development in various countries of the South and the East.
