I posted their thinking about the basket, and we have continued to add books with similar features to the basket throughout the year.
We add to the basket quite a bit throughout the first month and then of course throughout the year. I like to find many versions of different fairy tales to add to this basket; they add variety and immediately start conversations about comparing and contrasting. Some of their favorites are The Gingerbread Man (Aylesworth 1988), Somebody and the Three Blairs (Tolhurst 1990), The Little Red Hen (Barton 1993), and Out of the Egg (Matthews 2007). Often, students will check out a fairy tale in our school library and add it to our basket.
Reading became a pleasure when we could choose “real” books. There were definite differences in our purpose and our process for reading at school and reading at home. Even those of us who read from basal readers at school knew that reading meant doing pages in our workbooks after each story. Again this reading was much different from the reading we did at home, where reading meant diving into a story and getting to know the characters as though they were our friends. Reading at school was a game that some of us got very good at and others took great pains to survive.
