EXPERIMENTAL Synthesis The synthetic route to the p-n-alkoxy-p'-cyanobiphenyls described by Gray was followed with little modification (3). Briefly, p-nitro-p'- bromobiphenyl was prepared by brominating p-nitrobiphenyl with bromine/glacial acetic acid reagent. The nitro group was converted to the amino group by refluxing with iron powder in ethanol and concentrated hydrochloric acid.

A close examination of the data points using the exponential plot revealed that the straight line relationship required by the Arrhenius expression is not really followed.
