Diagrams for the recording of pathologic findings. 3 Visual Documentation Objective visual documentation can be accomplished by drawings, photography, movies, and, in special cases, radiography. The advances in color photography have made the drawing of pictures almost superfluous. Visual documention is used mainly for follow-up examinations, training and continuing education, as well as for therapeutic trials. This procedure has been particularly useful when different physicians examine the patient and also as a check on young endoscopists.

Occasionally, the biopsy capsule will bite into the mucosa without complete transection. In this situation, waiting until the particle has become necrotic and sloughs off will usually suffice; this may, however, take days to weeks. If the capsule cannot be removed following the hydraulic biopsy step, one should wait in any case since it can usually be removed without difficulty on the following day. 3 Retrograde Choiangiopancreatography (ERCP) Following instillation of contrast media into the pancreatic duct system, transient hyperamylasemia occurs in about one-third of all patients, depending upon the amount of contrast media used and the pressure of instillation.

Explosions of methane during electrosurgical procedures (coagulation, removal of polyps) have been repeatedly reported. For this reason, some examiners insufflate a noncombustible gas (C0 2 ) during an electrosurgical procedure. This does not appear to be necessary according to more recent 40 Emergency Treatment of Complications studies, since no explosive gases can be detected following the intensive bowel preparation for colonoscopy [1]. Bleeding following a forceps biopsy in the course of rectosigmoidoscopy is frequent.
